USWA
Jerry Lawler won the Texas title in the title vs. title match with Eric Embry on 4/26 at the Dallas Sportatorium. This title change probably won't be recognized in Memphis because Lawler is supposed to be taking a vacation there because of neck injuries. Before the Lawler-Embry match, Lawler told the fans in Texas that he's working the match against doctor's orders because of his neck injury which is I guess because some fans in Tennessee may see the match in syndication or on ESPN.

Danny Davis won the USWA light heavyweight title on 4/23 from El Grande Pistolero (Gypsy Joe) in Louisville. This change will be recognized throughout both circuits because three nights later in Dallas, they announced to the crowd Davis had won the light heavyweight title from Pistolero.

4/26 in Dallas drew 583 as Terry Garvin beat Pistolero via DQ for over-the-top rope, Sweet Georgia Brown beat Sweet Sherri to win the USWA Texas women's title, Texas Hangmen beat Bill Dundee & Danny Davis when Dundee was pinned after J.C. Ice Baby (Jamie Dundee) gave one of the Hangmen a gimmick to put in his mask and use on Dundee, Jeff Jarrett & Robert Fuller beat Steve Austin & Tom Prichard via DQ when Austin hit ref Tony Falk with a chair, Gary Young beat Boogie Man via DQ when Embry interfered, Lawler pinned Embry in a match with the USWA title up against the Texas title. The match was in a cage. After the obligatory ref bump, Tojo Yamamoto gave Embry a chain which he used on Lawler and covered him but no ref. Jarrett then came out and punched Tojo and grabbed his briefcase. Embry climbed to the top of the cage as did Jarrett, holding the briefcase and Jarrett hit Embry with it and he fell back into the ring and Lawler pinned him. The finale was a Thunderdome match where Austin & Embry & Hangmen & Pistolero beat Davis & Dundee & Fuller & Young & Jarrett in a match where the heels managed to handcuff all the faces and were allowed to continue to beat on them until everyone on the face team juiced.

4/23 in Louisville saw Davis beat Pistolero for the title, Ice Baby beat Night Train Jackson, Dundee & Steve Keirn beat Hangmen in a non-title match, Jarrett & Fuller beat Prichard & Austin and Eddie Gilbert DDQ Embry.

4/22 in Memphis drew 1,500 as Davis pin Jackson, Pistolero beat Brian Christopher, Ice Baby pinned Uptown Bruno in a match with Ice Baby's hair against Bruno's $1,000 with Bill Dundee as ref when one Hangman distracted Dundee and the other Hangman interfered, Hangmen no contest with Keirn & Dundee for the tag titles, Fuller & Jarrett beat Prichard & Austin, Embry beat Gilbert in a chain match when Embry blew Kabuki mist into Gilbert's eyes and Fuller & Keirn & Jarrett & Dundee went to a no contest with Ajustin & Prichard & Hangmen.

Austin is leaving for WCW shortly.

Several other guys were fired as the group is trying to cut costs. The departed include Bruno and Jackson, while Keirn went back home to Florida after finishing his three-week run.

Keirn was "injured" on TV on 4/27 when he had a singles match against Austin and the Hangmen jumped in and they gave him a double stuff pile driver on the floor.

Hangmen then had a television match against Davis & Gilbert in which both falls ended with a ton of faces and heels both interfering to push the 10-man Texas Brawl anything goes street fight match on 4/29. . . 4/29 in Memphis has Gilbert & Dundee & Davis & Fuller & Jarrett vs. Hangmen & Austin & Prichard & Embry plus the undercard has Davis vs. Hangman Psycho, Dundee vs. Hangman Killer, Fuller vs. Prichard (both men are vowing to bring in loaded boots after Prichard put a gimmick on his boot to bloody up Fuller on television), Jarrett vs. Austin for the Southern title and Embry vs. Gilbert in a Texas Death match with two referees.

The first USWA spot show in Texas in many months took place on 4/27 in Ennis, TX and drew less than 100 fans.

On the Dallas TV show, J.C. Ice Baby acknowledged that Bill Dundee was his father, but it was something that slipped out rather than planned. It's never been said in Dallas about the relation between the two. Later in the show, when Dundee did an interview, he never even brought up the subject and it appears it was just a situation of someone getting confused when they are wrestling with two different story-lines per week.

Dundee & Davis did say that the reason Ice Baby hadn't been around was because they had gotten him suspended from the USWA these past few weeks.

5/3 in Dallas is a Cinco de Mayo celebration (Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, in Mexican independence day) with all seats $5 with Austin & Prichard vs. Fuller & Jarrett in a street fight, Jarrett vs. Embry for the Southern title with both men being allowed to bring one weapon of their choice into the ring and they flip a coin and the winners' weapon is put on a pole and whomever can get it off the pole can use it, Pistolero vs. Terry Daniels (remember Private Terry Daniels from the WWF in 1984?), Young & Garvin vs. Embry & Boogie Man, Dundee & Davis vs. Hangmen in a double chain match and three Lucha Libre matches including a six-man tag in which the winning team is to get "14,000 pesos" but none of the Luchadores are famous, in fact one is Chico Torres.

Lately, there are some local promotions that have been talking about starting television programs. For those promotions that have this in mind. I would like to invite you to watch, in my opinion, one of the best Wrestling television programs in Tennessee. SAW(Showtime Allstar Wrestling). You can watch SAW @ www.sawonline.tv every week.

SAW is out of the Nashville area and is ran by Reno Riggins. Michael St. John along with Riggins do the announcing. The Naturals, Kid Kash, Rob Roy McCoy, Boogie Woogie Boy, Arrick Andrews and T.J Harley are just some of the talent in SAW.

Is there someone in the Memphis area that would be able to produce a TV program as good as SAW? Or will we have to settle with more of the same old "Cable Access" junk?
I guess only time will tell!

Dated: June 29th, 1998

By Stephen Lyon slyon10yearsago@hotmail.com

HERE AND THERE: Randy Hales’ Memphis Power Pro Wrestling promotion drew an estimated 3,500 fans to the Mid-South Coliseum on June 23rd, in a show considered a major success. The show had lots of help from the WWF, who sent Kane, Jeff Jarrett, Road Dogg, Rock & Roll Express, New Midnight Express and Jim Cornette. It was expected that the WWF would start sending some wrestlers on developmental contracts to work as regulars in this territory. The main event was Jerry Lawler vs Kane. Kane was managed by Jim Cornette, as Paul Bearer was injured. Cornette cut a promo explaining that he’d rather be in Lawler’s corner, but that Bearer was his friend and asked him to manage Kane as a favour. The match ended when Kane was pounding on Lawler, and Stacy Carter (Lawler’s girlfriend) hit the ring and attacked Kane with her shoe. Kane barely sold the blow, and went to chokeslam Stacy, only for Lawler to throw a fireball at him. Kane then went crazy, chokeslamming both Cornette and the referee Bill Rush for the D.Q….. Also on the show, Jeff Jarrett pinned Billy Travis, and blasted Travis’ manager, Brandon Baxter with a guitar shot afterwards. Buddy Landell ran in, and Landell & Travis left Jarrett laying……. Brian Christopher pinned Road Dogg after a superkick…… Bill Dundee & Moondog Spot & King Mabel & Ashley Hudson (later known as ‘Ozzie Rooles’, Daffney’s boyfriend in WCW in mid-2000) & Jimmy Valiant beat Tracy Smothers & Tony Falk & Koko B. Ware & Master B & B.J. Awesome, when Spot pinned Falk…… Rock & Roll Express beat the New Midnight Express; and Jacqueline beat Derrick King in a match where, if King had won, Jacqueline would have had to have married him.

News & Notes 6.21.08

Good news and bad news out of Selmer,TN!

The good news is the show ran by Kevin White/Hub City/Memphis Wrestling Stars & company(No Official Name as of yet), has reportedly drawn a house of over 300! That's good for any event, let alone a professional wrestling show with local talent and the only "big names" being Jerry Lawler, Brian Christopher, Kevin White and Doug Gilbert(he was advertised!) One would have to think with TV, how much more would they have drawn? Anyway, that's great news for those guys.

Now for the bad news for any Chikara fans in the area. Tonights SIE(Southern Impact Elite)Show WILL NOT feature any of the Chikara talent as advertised. That being said, the show WILL still go on according to sources. You should still have Stan Lee,The Southern Saints,The Posse,Naughty By Nature,BLS,Anita Page,Blalock The Blazer and it should give spots to some other area talent that might not have gotten a chance. Anyway, It still should be a pretty interesting show. So, If your anywhere near Selmer,TN, go support those guys.

Also, in news out of Memphis. MAW(Mid-South All-Star Wrestling)will be presenting "UNKNOWN ROAD" Sunday, 27,2008 @ The New Daisy Theater on Historic Beale Street, Belltime will be 5:30. Derrick King & Reno Diamond will be facing Johnny Morton and an unnamed TNA wrestler. Only time will tell us who this TNA star will be, but I thought it would be funny to bring in ODB! Others to appear on this show are: Chris Lexx, The Crime, Danny B, Austin Lane, Scott Fury, Jason Richards, Big Country, Armageddon & more! They also have a Street Team up and running. So, if you would like to "earn" some passes to the show, get on over to www.mawmemphis.com and join The MAW Street Team.

If there is anyone out there in Memphis that knows of a venue that would like to host a Pro Wrestling Show on a weekly or bi-weekly basis? Contact me @ championshipwrestling80@gmail.com or shoot on over to the 901wrestling MySpace and leave a message.

BTW, The Tennessee Dolls are the BEST Tag-Team you've never heard of!

Hotrod calls out Derrick King and awards him with the MAW Championship Belt as a belated birthday & father's day present & DK declared himself the champ. But he is not. It was said that night there will be a tournament in the near future to crown a new champ now that the belt has been returned, so to speak. And the last time they went out Morton & Lexx appeared in the ring. DK threw the belt at Lexx & Morton in his haste to get away as they cleared the ring.

The Hardcore Match between Armageddon & Big Country was a no contest after these two big men fought all through the New Daisy, then Armageddon chased Ref Willie Flynn out of the building and down Beale.

Selmer-June 20th

MAW Anarchy[Commercial]

MAW Returned to the Daisy in April and now presents Anarchy in June! 4 Big Matches have been signed which features the war that continues between KC Gold and Derrick King. KC Gold has enlisted his Veteran of TFO, Johnny Morton to take out Derrick King.

In April, the team of "Irish Dragon" Scott Fury and Memphis 10 winner Austin Lane defeated Chris Lexx and The Crime in a non-title bout to earn their #1 Contendership to the Tag Team Titles. On June 15th, they will will get their shot at the gold.

The Associates do battle as the man paid by Derrick King, Big Country takes on KC Gold's paid bodyguard, Armageddon in a Anything Goes, Hardcore match. There is a good chance blood will flow this Father's Day when anything that isn't nailed down can be used as a weapon.

For the past few months, Danny B Good and Dre Black have passed each other on the roads in other promotions and it was Dre Black who cost Danny B his shot at the Memphis 10 tournament. These two are arguably battling for a shot at the MAW Heavyweight Championship. A title currently held in limbo.

Expect other matches to be announced via the site or live at the New Daisy. Belltime is 5:30pm, doors open at 5! Tickets are 8 at the door. If you child is 12 and under, they get in with your paid admission for FREE! One Child per adult.

RAVISHING RANDY, WILDSIDE and CHRIS LEXX came to the ring demanding to know why they had to wrestle BLACK THUNDER...WILDSIDEclaimed it was HOTROD's (the owner) fault, whcihc comes from the trouble that they have in TIWF..then Chris Lexx complained that HOTROD causes problems at MAW at the New Daisy. They began to inquire bout the friendship that HOTROD and SCOTTY C have and then they attacked SCOTTY C until BLACK THUNDER made the save. SCOTTY then said since he had connections with the ones who held their contracts for TIWF and MAW that if they lost the match, they wold lost their contracts and therefore would not be able to wrestle for thier respective organizations.
